We were fortunate to meet Michele Sonner several years ago in Phoenix and found her to be a wonderful person and a talented designer. Michou was one of the original designer collections that we carried at K.Hollis Jewelers. We love Michele's use of colorful gemstones in her necklace, bracelet and ring designs.
Michou has been turning inspiration into art for over 20 years, marrying contemporary jewelry design with centuries-old techniques to create distinctive jewelry that is truly a work of art.
The secret? Exceptional designs created by Michou at the Lake Tahoe, California studio, then handcrafted with ingenious skill by artisans on the lush tropical island of Bali, famous for entire families of jewelry artists who pass their time-honored techniques from generation to generation.
We invite you to explore the world of Michou, where the past and present combine to create designer jewelry that brings you Everyday Elegance.
Michou calls its jewelry "Art to Wear," and indeed each piece is a diminutive sculpture created with exquisite, one-of-a-kind details: Tiny, gleaming hinges that move between fluid elements of filigree, granulation, scrollwork, or reppousse; luscious 22K gold vermeil accents; vibrant faceted stones set against gleaming sterling silver, polished bright or brushed to a pearlescent finish.
Michou's Art to Wear jewelry is perfect for every occasion, with dramatic pieces born of inspired vision and lovingly brought to life, suitable for both night and day.
About Michele Sonner
It is nearly impossible to separate Michou from its creator, Michele Sonner. The name Michou itself, a derivation of the French endearment 'mon petit chou', is the childhood nickname of the artist behind Michou's unique designs. The name, like the jewelry Michou creates, is a keepsake of Michele's childhood and part of her history.
It is Michele's love of art, antiques and history that first drew her into jewelry design over twenty years ago, when by chance she discovered a tiny collection of rings during a ski trip in the Swiss Alps. The rings were created in Bali using a very special technique called granulation, an ancient art form of creating patterns by fusing granules of silver or gold onto an object.
Michele was so inspired that months later the New York City native found herself on the faraway tropical island of Bali to apprentice with the artisans, learning skills that had been handed down over countless generations. And so Michou was born - marrying modern design with an ancient art form learned from experienced Balinese artisans. Michele lives in beautiful Lake Tahoe, California. When she's not focusing on the next Michou collection, she hits the slopes with her husband Richard Topper, a fine-art photographer, and son Lance.
"I create collections that women can connect with and embrace; each piece is ageless, filled with heart so that it actually becomes part of the women who wear them." -- Michele Sonner
