  • Custom Jewelry Online vs. In Person

Custom jewelry is exciting, but it can also feel intimidating if you’ve never done it before. You know you want something meaningful, personal, and lasting. What’s less clear is how  to get there. These days, you have options. You can design a piece online from your couch, or you can sit down with a jeweler in person and bring your idea to life together. Both paths lead to a custom piece, but the experience and the outcome are very different. Here’s an honest look at what each option offers, so you can decide what feels right for you. The Online Custom Jewelry Experience Online custom jewelry platforms are built for convenience. You select a setting, choose a stone, adjust a few details, and see a polished rendering appear on your screen. For some people, that simplicity is appealing. If you already know exactly what you want and are comfortable making decisions without guidance, online tools can feel efficient. They work best for straightforward designs with minimal emotional attachment. That said, online customization has limits. You’re making decisions without seeing how a piece feels on your hand, how proportions look in real life, or how different metals and stones interact under natural light. You’re also relying on presets rather than collaboration. If something feels slightly off, there’s often no one to talk it through with in the moment. Most importantly, online platforms don’t know your story. They don’t know why this piece matters or what it’s meant to represent. The In-Person Custom Jewelry Experience Designing jewelry in person is intimate. It starts with a conversation, not a dropdown menu. At K. Hollis Jewelers, custom design often begins with a question like, What are you hoping this piece will represent? From there, everything builds naturally. You can see and touch materials, compare stones side by side, and understand why one choice might work better than another. In-person design allows for nuance. A ring can be adjusted slightly to better suit your hand. A stone can be reset to honor its history. A design can evolve as you talk through it, rather than being locked in from the start. You’re also working with professionals who can explain trade-offs clearly and honestly. What will wear well over time, what fits your lifestyle, and where your budget is best spent. There’s no pressure, just guidance. And when the piece is finished, you know exactly how it came to be. Nothing feels mysterious or rushed. Why The Way You Design Matters Custom jewelry isn’t just about the final piece. It’s about trust. When you work in person with a jeweler who will be there long after the design is complete, you gain peace of mind. Your ring can be resized. Your necklace can be repaired. Your story is remembered. At K. Hollis, custom jewelry often includes pieces clients already own. Stones from inherited jewelry, gold from unworn chains, or elements that hold sentimental value. That kind of design simply doesn’t translate well online, but it’s where some of the most meaningful pieces come from. There’s also something reassuring about seeing where your jewelry is made, meeting the people behind it, and knowing exactly who to call if you have a question. So Which Option Is Better? There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer, and that’s okay. Online customization works when you want something simple and fast. In-person design works when you want to feel supported, informed, and confident every step of the way. It’s especially helpful if you’re unsure where to start or if the piece you’re creating carries emotional weight. Custom jewelry doesn’t have to feel overwhelming or high-pressure. Sometimes it’s just about having a conversation, seeing what’s possible, and letting the design come together naturally with someone who understands both the technical details and the personal significance behind them. That’s often where the most meaningful pieces begin. Ready to explore custom jewelry in person? Schedule a consultation or stop into K. Hollis Jewelers to see materials up close and talk through ideas at your own pace.

  • Jewelry That Says More: A Guide to Meaningful Gifts

If you’re looking for a meaningful gift that truly shows someone you love them, this guide is for you. Jewelry is a beautiful and lasting gesture, made even more special by the gemstones and designs that symbolize love, unity, faithfulness, and connection. Whether you’re shopping for Valentine’s Day, an anniversary, or simply a thoughtful surprise, understanding the meaning behind different styles can help you choose a piece that feels personal and intentional. Below are some timeless jewelry designs and gemstones, along with the meanings that have been associated with them for generations. Meaningful Jewelry Gifts: A Guide to Timeless Designs Gemstone Jewelry Gemstones have long been valued not only for their beauty but also for the symbolism they carry. Choosing a gemstone with meaning can add depth to your gift and make it feel even more thoughtful. Ruby Rubies are widely known as a symbol of passion and love. Their rich red color has long been associated with deep emotion, romance, and devotion. Ruby jewelry makes a striking statement and is often chosen to represent strong, heartfelt connections. Emerald Emeralds have historically been seen as an amulet for good fortune. In ancient cultures, they were believed to foster love, fertility, and renewal. Their vibrant green hue represents growth and harmony, making emerald jewelry a meaningful choice for those looking to nurture their relationship. Sapphire Sapphires are associated with trust, loyalty, and strength. They have been worn for centuries as a symbol of faithfulness and sincerity. While classic blue sapphires remain popular, sapphires come in a range of colors, offering meaningful options that feel both timeless and personal. Two-Stone Jewelry: A Symbol of Togetherness Two-stone jewelry, also known as toi et moi , which translates to “you and me,” features two stones set side by side. This design symbolizes two people coming together in love and partnership. Each stone can represent an individual, a shared journey, or two meaningful moments. Two-stone pieces are a thoughtful way to reflect connection while still feeling modern and understated. Interlocking Circle Designs: A Lasting Bond Interlocking circle designs represent an unbreakable bond between two people. The connected shapes symbolize unity, continuity, and lasting connection. Often subtle and elegant, this style is easy to wear every day and serves as a quiet reminder of the relationship it represents. Interlocking circles are a meaningful option for those who appreciate symbolism without being overly literal. Heart Jewelry: The Classic Symbol of Love Heart jewelry is a classic way to show someone you love them. While it is one of the most recognizable symbols of affection, today’s heart designs are more refined and wearable than ever. From delicate pendants to simple gold or diamond accents , heart jewelry can feel sweet, timeless, and personal without being overdone. It’s a thoughtful choice for expressing love in a direct and heartfelt way. Choosing a Gift with Meaning The most meaningful jewelry gifts are chosen with intention. Whether it’s a gemstone that represents love and loyalty or a design that symbolizes connection and unity, understanding the meaning behind a piece can help you find something that truly resonates. At K. Hollis Jewelers, we’re always happy to help guide you through different styles and meanings so you can choose a gift that feels right for the person you’re shopping for. The Importance of Personalization in Jewelry When selecting a piece of jewelry, personalization can elevate the gift. Consider engraving a special date or a meaningful phrase. This small touch can transform a beautiful piece into a cherished keepsake. Personalized jewelry speaks volumes about the thought and care put into the gift. Final Thoughts on Meaningful Jewelry Gifts In conclusion, meaningful jewelry is more than just an accessory. It is a representation of emotions, connections, and shared moments. Whether you choose a gemstone, a two-stone design, or a classic heart, the right piece can convey your feelings in a lasting way. Remember, the best gifts come from the heart, and understanding the significance behind each piece can make your choice even more special. Explore the world of jewelry with intention, and let your gifts tell a story of love and connection.

  • Gold Prices Are Still Rising in 2026. What Does That Mean for You?

Back in February 2025, we shared an update on rising gold prices and what that meant for jewelry buyers, sellers, and collectors. Since then, the precious metals market has continued to climb, with today’s prices reaching some of the highest levels we’ve ever seen. If you’ve been thinking about selling gold, trading in old jewelry, upgrading a piece, or investing in fine jewelry, now is an important time to understand what’s happening and how it may impact your decisions. At K. Hollis Jewelers, our goal is to help you make informed choices for your collection, whether you’re buying, redesigning, or simply wanting to better understand what you already own. Where Gold and Other Metals Stand Today As of January 26, 2026, precious metals have seen significant increases compared to early 2025: Gold:  Around $5,092 per ounce Silver:  Around $107 per ounce Platinum:  Around $2,549 per ounce For comparison, in early 2025, gold was hovering closer to the high $2,000s and low $3,000s per ounce. That means gold has increased more than 1.5x in a relatively short period of time. This kind of movement is uncommon and creates meaningful opportunities for many of our clients. Why Are Gold Prices Still Rising? Gold prices fluctuate based on supply, demand, and broader economic conditions. The continued rise is being supported by several key factors : Global economic and geopolitical uncertainty Inflation and currency value concerns Strong central bank and institutional gold buying Together, these trends have helped keep gold and other precious metals at elevated levels and support long-term strength in the market. What This Means for You Your Gold Jewelry May Be Worth More Than You Think Broken jewelry, old chains, single earrings, outdated styles, or pieces you no longer wear may be worth significantly more today than they were just a year ago. Many clients are surprised to learn how much value is sitting in their jewelry box. Trade-Ins Go Further Higher gold prices can make trading in gold especially powerful. Your old gold can be applied toward: A new piece of fine jewelry An engagement ring or wedding band A custom redesign An upgrade to a higher-quality diamond or gemstone With today’s prices, your trade-in value may cover a larger portion of your purchase than you expect. A Smart Time to Redesign or Upgrade If you love the sentimental value of a piece but not the style, redesigning can be a great option. Rising gold prices mean your existing gold can be repurposed into something new while maximizing its current value. Is Now a Good Time to Get Your Jewelry Appraised? Yes. With gold and precious metals at historic highs, updated appraisals are more important than ever for insurance and peace of mind. You may want to prioritize an updated appraisal if: Your appraisal is more than 3 to 5 years old You’ve inherited jewelry and are unsure of its current value Gold and diamond prices have changed significantly since your last appraisal You’ve had a piece redesigned or upgraded You want to make sure your insurance coverage reflects today’s replacement costs Outdated appraisals can leave you underinsured, meaning your coverage may not reflect what it would actually cost to replace a piece today. A current appraisal helps protect what matters most and gives you a clearer picture of your jewelry’s true value in today’s market. A Smart Way to Shop Gold Jewelry Right Now As gold prices rise, how and when you shop can make a difference. At K. Hollis Jewelers, we don’t automatically raise the prices of in-stock jewelry every time the gold market increases. Many of the pieces in our cases were purchased or made when gold costs were lower, which means you may find especially strong value on in-stock pieces. For special orders and made-to-order jewelry, pricing is based on the current cost of gold at the time the piece is created. As gold continues to rise, special order pricing may increase over time. If you’re considering a custom piece or special order, placing your order sooner rather than later can help you lock in today’s pricing before potential increases. This is one of the ways we help our clients shop thoughtfully and get the most value from their jewelry purchases. What Should You Do Next? With gold and other metals at historic highs, now is simply a smart time to: Evaluate pieces you no longer wear Consider trade-in or redesign options Update appraisals for important pieces Take advantage of elevated gold value Talk through your options with a trusted local jeweler Let’s Make the Most of Today’s Market Together Gold prices don’t stay at historic highs forever. Whether you’re holding onto jewelry you no longer wear, considering a redesign, thinking about a special purchase, or simply wanting to make sure your important pieces are properly insured, now is a great time to take action. At K. Hollis Jewelers, we’re here to offer honest guidance, not pressure. Bring in what you have, ask questions, and let’s take a look together. You may be surprised how today’s market can help you turn what’s sitting in your jewelry box into something meaningful for the next chapter.

  • Gold Prices Are Rising – What Does It Mean for You?

If you've been following the market, you may have noticed that gold prices have been climbing. Whether you're looking to buy a new piece of fine jewelry or thinking about understanding the value of your current collection, this shift can have a big impact on your decisions. At K. Hollis Jewelers, we believe in keeping our customers informed so you can make the best choices for your collection. Let’s take a closer look at what’s happening with gold prices and what it means for you. Why Are Gold Prices Rising? Gold prices fluctuate based on supply, demand, and economic factors. Recently, prices have been rising due to: Economic Uncertainty  – When inflation rises or the stock market becomes unpredictable, investors turn to gold as a safe-haven asset, increasing its value. Global Demand  – Central banks and investors worldwide have been buying more gold, driving up prices. Supply Challenges  – Mining and production costs have increased, limiting the supply of new gold. According to recent reports, gold prices have hit   record highs  and are expected to remain strong throughout the year. How Does This Affect Buying Gold Jewelry? If you’re considering a new piece of gold jewelry, now is the time to buy before prices climb even higher. Since gold is a major factor in the cost of fine jewelry, rising prices may mean higher retail costs in the coming months. At K. Hollis Jewelers, we work hard to keep our pricing fair, but purchasing sooner rather than later can help you lock in the best value. Is Now a Good Time to Get Your Gold Jewelry Appraised? Yes! With gold at high market value, now is a great opportunity to have your gold jewelry professionally appraised. If you have treasured pieces or heirlooms, understanding their true value can help you make informed decisions about insurance, resale potential, or simply knowing what your collection is worth. Our team at K. Hollis Jewelers offers fair and transparent evaluations so you can have confidence in your gold jewelry’s value. What Should You Do Next? • Behind the Design: A Floral-Inspired Engagement Ring Redesign

When she came in, her engagement ring and wedding band had a story full of love. After years of wearing them, she was ready for an upgrade. The diamonds were still meaningful, yet she wanted something new, fresh, and designed to reflect her style today. That’s where Karen stepped in. Reimagining a Love Story Her ring setting before with the stones removed and the after with the stones reset in a stunning new design. The process began with our jewelers. They carefully removed each diamond by hand from her engagement ring and band. With steady craftsmanship, every stone was preserved and prepared for its new setting. The gold was traded in, but the diamonds—filled with history—were ready for a fresh start. From there, Karen collaborated with her to dream up a new design. They envisioned a floral-inspired ring that would feel both timeless and unique. It would be bold yet feminine, deeply personal to her story. A Reveal Full of “Wows” The reveal was unforgettable. With her eyes closed, Karen asked her husband to slip the new ring on her finger. He couldn’t resist joking with a second proposal, which she playfully turned down before quickly declaring he wasn’t getting the ring back. When she finally opened her eyes, her reaction was pure joy. “Oh wow!” she nearly screamed, amazed that such a stunning, larger-than-life design had come from her very own diamonds. She even wondered aloud if it was really hers—until Karen placed the old setting next to the new, showing the transformation side by side. Her husband was just as taken with it. He admired the details and repeated “wow” as the ring caught the light. The floral-inspired design had not only captured her vision but created a moment they’ll both remember forever. From Past to Present What was once her engagement ring and wedding band has become a single statement piece. It feels bigger, bolder, and completely hers. By trading in the gold and redesigning her diamonds, she created a ring that celebrates the love story she’s always worn, refreshed for the years to come. The Importance of Personalization Personalization is key in jewelry design. Every piece tells a story. When you redesign a ring, you’re not just changing its appearance; you’re also honoring its history. This process allows you to reflect on your journey and create something that resonates with your current self. Karen understands this deeply. She believes that each design should embody the wearer's personality and experiences. This connection makes the piece even more special. Why Choose Custom Jewelry? Custom jewelry offers a unique opportunity to express individuality. Unlike mass-produced pieces, custom designs are tailored to your preferences. You can choose the materials, stones, and designs that speak to you. At K. Hollis Jewelers, we take pride in crafting pieces that are as unique as the people who wear them. Our skilled jewelers work closely with clients to ensure that every detail is perfect. Thinking About Your Own Redesign? Do you have an engagement ring, wedding band, or other jewelry you’re ready to upgrade into something new? At K. Hollis Jewelers in Batavia, Karen and our team of skilled jewelers love helping people bring their jewelry to life in fresh ways. Together, we’ll explore new ideas, carefully handle your treasured stones, and create something meaningful, wearable, and designed just for you. Stop in and let’s start designing your story.

  • 2026 Engagement Ring Trends: A Beautiful Balance of Old and New

Engagement ring trends for 2026 are all about balance. The new year brings a mix of classic and modern styles, where timeless designs meet fresh details. Across Batavia and the Fox Valley, couples are looking for engagement rings that feel distinctive, stylish, and full of meaning. Smaller Stones, Bigger Style This semi-mount engagement ring features delicately placed diamonds along a 14K yellow gold shank, designed to hold a 1.00 ct round center diamond. Smaller center stones are taking the spotlight. Rings with stones under two carats are becoming favorites, especially when paired with delicate bands or bold gold settings that highlight their beauty. These designs show that size isn’t everything. It’s all about proportion, sparkle, and personality. Lab-grown diamonds remain popular for their clarity and value, while natural diamonds are making a quiet comeback for those who love a touch of tradition. Vintage and Nature-Inspired Designs On the left, a 1.00 ct marquise diamond set in 14K yellow gold with a delicate leaf motif. On the right, a 1.50 ct marquise diamond set in 14K gold with timeless vintage detailing. Vintage-inspired engagement rings are set to shine in 2026. Detailed filigree, floral motifs, and antique-style cuts are being reimagined for today’s bride. Each one brings the romance of old-world craftsmanship with a modern touch. Nature-inspired styles are also gaining attention. Petal-shaped prongs, leaf patterns, and softly curved bands create a graceful and organic feel. Many couples are finding inspiration in timeless celebrity looks that celebrate vintage influence in a fresh way. Minimalist and Timeless This stunning ring features a 100-facet Centurion radiant cut diamond set in a minimalist gold design. Simple elegance is still going strong. Sleek solitaires, hidden halos, and slim gold bands remain favorites for their effortless sophistication.  These designs are timeless and easy to wear. They stand the test of time—beautiful today, tomorrow, and for every milestone that follows. Unique Settings and Mixed Metals A stunning 14K yellow gold wide band centered with a princess-cut diamond and accented by white gold prongs and a hidden halo on the profile. Creative settings are defining 2026’s engagement ring designs. East-west orientations, bezel settings, and thicker gold bands add individuality without sacrificing elegance. Mixed metal rings are also growing in popularity. Pairing yellow gold bands with white gold or platinum prongs creates a subtle contrast that feels both modern and classic. From hidden details to personalized engravings, every choice adds a special touch that makes your ring one of a kind. Gold Takes the Lead An elegant round-cut diamond engagement ring paired with a matching band, both in 14K yellow gold with pear-shaped diamond accents for a romantic, nature-inspired look. Yellow gold is taking center stage again. Its warm, radiant color has become the top choice for engagement rings at K. Hollis Jewelers. While white gold and platinum are still timeless options, yellow gold offers a glow that feels both contemporary and nostalgic. It’s a flattering choice that suits every skin tone and brings a rich, luxurious finish to any design. Finding Your Perfect Match The biggest trend for 2026 is individuality. Couples throughout Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles, and the Fox Valley are choosing rings that reflect who they are and the story they’re building together. At K. Hollis Jewelers , we believe your engagement ring should be as personal as the moment you say yes . Whether you love vintage detail, modern simplicity, or the lasting glow of yellow gold, we’ll help you find—or design—the ring that feels like it was made just for you.

  • Behind the Design: A Custom Jewelry Redesign Using Heirlooms

Some redesigns begin with a spark of inspiration. Others begin with a story. Becky’s bracelet was both. She came to us with a small collection of jewelry passed down from her loved ones: her mother’s rings, including her engagement ring, her great-grandmother’s engagement ring, and a chain bracelet that belonged to her husband. Each piece held significance, but none of them fit naturally into her everyday life. She wanted a way to bring them together into something she could enjoy every day. Karen met with Becky to learn about the meaning behind each piece and the kind of bracelet she envisioned. Together, they talked through options, styles, and how to highlight all seven diamonds in a way that felt intentional and true to her story. The goal wasn’t to transform the jewelry into something new just for the sake of it. It was to honor those who passed it down and create something that felt authentic to who Becky is today. Our team designed a brushed gold center plate that brings a soft, warm texture to the bracelet. Each of Becky’s diamonds was prong set across the plate in a clean, balanced layout that lets every stone shine. Her husband’s chain became the perfect foundation, adding a sentimental detail that makes the piece uniquely hers. The finished bracelet is simple, meaningful, and full of the people she carries with her every day. It’s a beautiful example of what redesign can do—turning heirlooms that live in a jewelry box into a piece that becomes part of someone’s everyday life. Projects like this are why we love what we do. Every redesign is personal, and every story matters. If you have jewelry tucked away that deserves a new life, we’d be honored to help you create something that feels right for you. • Diamond Shapes 101: Your Guide to Finding the Perfect Cut

Choosing a diamond is one of the most exciting parts of engagement ring shopping. Every shape reflects a different style and tells a story about the person who wears it. Whether you love something classic, modern, bold, or romantic, there is a perfect diamond shape waiting for you. Here is a simple guide to the most popular cuts, along with a few tips on style and what to keep in mind when choosing your favorite. Round Brilliant The round brilliant is the most popular diamond shape. Its faceting pattern is designed to maximize sparkle, which makes it a favorite for brides who want a classic and timeless look. Style Personality:  Traditional, elegant, loves a clean and polished look Pros:  Exceptional brilliance, looks beautiful in any setting style, very versatile Cons:  Can appear smaller for its carat weight and is a common choice, so it may feel less distinctive than fancy shapes. Oval Oval diamonds have a graceful, elongated look that makes fingers appear longer. They offer a sparkle similar to a round diamond but with a softer, more modern feel. Non-fancy cuts refer to round diamonds , which are the most classic and traditional shape. Every other shape — like oval, pear, emerald, cushion, radiant, and marquise — is considered a fancy cut . Round diamonds are known for their brilliant sparkle and timeless appeal. Fancy cuts offer more unique silhouettes and often look larger for their carat weight. Both are beautiful choices, and the best shape is the one that feels right for your style. Which diamond shape sparkles the most? Round brilliant diamonds are known for having the most sparkle because of their 57 or 58 facets designed to maximize light return. They’re cut specifically to give you that classic, bright, all-angle sparkle people love. There is one exception at K. Hollis Jewelers: Our Centurion 100-facet diamonds  are engineered for even greater brilliance, with nearly double the number of facets and an average of 20 percent more sparkle  than a traditional round diamond. If you love maximum fire and brightness, they’re a beautiful option to explore in person. Which diamond shape looks the biggest for its carat weight? Ovals, marquise, and pear shapes tend to look larger because of their elongated silhouettes. Emerald and Asscher cuts have a more understated glow but may appear slightly smaller due to their step-cut facets. What diamond shape is best for an engagement ring? There’s no single “best” shape. It depends on your personal style. Round diamonds are a timeless favorite, oval and pear shapes offer a modern but elegant look, and emerald or Asscher cuts feel clean and sophisticated. The right shape is the one you love looking at every day. Does the diamond shape affect durability? Some shapes, like marquise, pear, and heart diamonds, have pointed ends that should be protected with a well-designed setting. Round, cushion, and emerald cuts tend to be more durable due to their softer edges. A quality setting will keep any shape secure. What are the different kinds of diamond cuts? There are three main cutting styles you’ll see when shopping for diamonds. Brilliant cuts  (like round, oval, pear, marquise, radiant, and cushion) are designed for sparkle and light return. Step cuts  (like emerald and Asscher) have long, clean facets that create a sleek, mirror-like glow instead of intense sparkle. Mixed cuts  combine the best of both, blending brilliant facets with geometric lines for a balanced look. Each cut offers its own personality, so it’s all about choosing what feels most true to your style.

  • Your Guide to Jewelry Financing

At K. Hollis Jewelers, Boutique & Wine Bar, we offer special financing options to make your jewelry purchase stress free. We want to be 100% transparent in everything we do at K. Hollis so here’s what we think you should know about financing your jewelry purchases – at our store or anywhere else. Understanding Retail Credit Cards Most jewelry stores, including ours, partner with third-party banks to offer retail credit cards. We use Jewelers Reserve from Citibank, but you might also encounter similar options from Wells Fargo, Comenity Bank, GE Capital, and others. Here's how it typically goes: Application: Applying for a retail credit card is easy, whether in-store or online. Approval: Your credit score determines whether you're approved, usually within minutes. Credit Limit: If approved, you'll get a credit limit for your account. Special Financing: We offer various financing options, for example, 12-months no interest or 24 months with equal payments at a lower interest rate than regular credit cards. Purchase: Once approved, you can use your new credit card to make your purchase. Beware of Penalties Special financing sounds great, but there's a catch. Missing payments or not paying off your purchase on time can lead to hefty penalties. This is super important and something we talk about with customers anytime they are financing their purchase with a retail credit card at our store. Here's what you need to know: Credit Impact: Like any credit card, your new credit is reported to credit agencies and can affect your credit score. Deferred Interest Financing: If you don't pay off the balance by the end of the promotional period, you'll be hit with high-interest charges dating back to the purchase date. If you’re buying an engagement ring, for example, not paying off the balance in full before the end of the promotional APR period can turn into an expensive mistake. Example: Let's say you’re approved for a $7,500 credit limit and buy a $5,000 ring with a 12-month no-interest option. If you’re unable to pay off the $5,000 before the end of the 12-month period, the typical interest rate is 27% to 36%. So in this example, let’s say your “penalty” interest rate is 34% on a $5,000 purchase. If you don't pay it off in time, you would owe an additional $1,700 in interest plus your remaining balance. Here’s a sample disclosure that you’ll see with this type of financing: Annual Percentage Rate (APR) for Purchases 33.24% This APR will vary with the market based on the Prime Rate. How to Avoid Paying Interest Your due date is at least 25 days after the close of each billing period. We will not charge you interest on purchases if you pay your entire balance by the due date each month. If you do not,   you will not get a grace period on purchases again until you pay the entire balance by the due date for two billing periods in a row. Minimum Interest Charge If you are charged interest, the charge will be no less than $3. For Credit Card Tips from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau To learn more about factors to consider when applying for or using a credit card, visit the website of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau at http://www.consumerfinance.gov/learnmore . Fees Annual Fee None Penalty Fees • Late Payment • Returned Payment Up to $41.00 Up to $41.00 Why special financing? Retailers offer special financing because they pay the finance company a discount fee when a customer uses one of their offers to make a purchase at their store. The fee is deducted from the purchase price, so they don’t get the full amount upfront Example: Purchase: You make a $5,000 purchase and use a 12-month no interest financing option to purchase an engagement ring. Discount Fee: The fee for the financing offer might be something like 5% of the purchase price. Payment: The retailer is paid $4,750 from the financing company. If the retailer is getting less when I use special financing, why do they do it? We can only speak about why we do it at K.Hollis Jewelers, Boutique & Wine Bar. We do it as a service for customers that need to spread out payments for a purchase over time. What purchases can I use special financing on? Financing is an option for nearly any jewelry purchase, but we notice it's particularly popular for buying engagement rings. There are several reasons for this, but often it's because the customer is eager to propose before they've saved up enough for the ring. We totally understand that feeling. Rob Hollis shares his own story: "I financed the engagement ring I gave to Karen over 35 years ago because I didn't have enough money to buy a ring, but I couldn't wait to start my married life with Karen. Best decision I ever made!" Alternatives to Retail Credit Cards If you can plan ahead, layaway plans are an option – they allow you to spread payments over time with no interest or fees (at least that’s how we do it at K.Hollis). The downside is that you can only take the jewelry home once the purchase is paid in full. Otherwise, we see customers get help from parents or other family members, use other financing vehicles like home equity loans, or their regular credit card. Key Takeaways Retail credit can be a useful tool if used wisely. We recommend you always read the fine print and get familiar with your payment penalties before committing to special financing. If special financing is not right for you, there are other choices. We're here to help you navigate your options and make the best decision for your needs. At K.Hollis Jewelers, Boutique & Wine Bar, transparency is our priority, so feel free to ask us anything about financing your purchase.
