- Diamond Grading––The 4 Cs | K. Hollis Jewelers Batavia, IL
Learn about the 4 Cs that universally determine the quality of your diamond–– carat weight, color, clarity, and cut. Know what to look for before you buy a diamond. Diamond Grading The 4Cs | Carat Weight, Color, Clarity, & Cut The Characteristics The four factors that describe a diamond are called the 4Cs: Carat Weight, Color, Clarity, and Cut (proportions & finish). Every diamond is unique – just like every person. An unlimited combination of factors determines a diamond's beauty, but fundamentally, its appearance results from how light reflects and refracts inside the diamond and exits out of the top. It’s why some diamonds sparkle and shine while others that appear almost identical on paper look dull and gray in person. So, while understanding the 4Cs will help you guess what a diamond might look like, there's no substitute for seeing a diamond in person. Carat Weight Carat weight refers to the size of the diamond. Based on a standard unit of measure, one carat is divided into 100 points. The term originated from carob seeds used to balance scales in ancient times. Carat weight can be deceiving since it is only indirectly associated with how large the diamond looks. When the weight of a diamond is not distributed properly, it affects the beauty of the stone. This is why 2 one carat stones that look about the same on paper can look dramatically different in person. Color The most desirable diamonds are colorless because the absence of color enhances the diamond's ability to reflect a rainbow of colors. Diamonds are graded on a scale of D (almost clear white) to N-Z. The most common diamond colors range from F to I color. In general, the closer the color grade is to D, the more expensive the diamond will be. Clarity Except for flawless diamonds (rare), all diamonds contain slight imperfections. Often invisible to the naked eye, these natural birthmarks fall into two categories-inclusions (internal) and blemishes (external). In general, fewer inclusions increase the value of the stone. Cut Cut gives the diamond its sparkle and brilliance. Of the four C's, it's the only one dependent on a human touch. Using precise mathematical formulas, the diamond cutter transforms a rough diamond into a beautiful jewel that reflects and refracts light. Diamond cuts are graded on a scale from excellent to poor. Learn more about the 4Cs and how diamonds are graded on the GIA website . Diamonds at K. Hollis Jewelers As with everything at K. Hollis Jewelers - no games or gimmicks. Just great service and value. - Custom Jewelry Online vs. In Person
Custom jewelry is exciting, but it can also feel intimidating if you’ve never done it before. You know you want something meaningful, personal, and lasting. What’s less clear is how to get there. These days, you have options. You can design a piece online from your couch, or you can sit down with a jeweler in person and bring your idea to life together. Both paths lead to a custom piece, but the experience and the outcome are very different. Here’s an honest look at what each option offers, so you can decide what feels right for you. The Online Custom Jewelry Experience Online custom jewelry platforms are built for convenience. You select a setting, choose a stone, adjust a few details, and see a polished rendering appear on your screen. For some people, that simplicity is appealing. If you already know exactly what you want and are comfortable making decisions without guidance, online tools can feel efficient. They work best for straightforward designs with minimal emotional attachment. That said, online customization has limits. You’re making decisions without seeing how a piece feels on your hand, how proportions look in real life, or how different metals and stones interact under natural light. You’re also relying on presets rather than collaboration. If something feels slightly off, there’s often no one to talk it through with in the moment. Most importantly, online platforms don’t know your story. They don’t know why this piece matters or what it’s meant to represent. The In-Person Custom Jewelry Experience Designing jewelry in person is intimate. It starts with a conversation, not a dropdown menu. At K. Hollis Jewelers, custom design often begins with a question like, What are you hoping this piece will represent? From there, everything builds naturally. You can see and touch materials, compare stones side by side, and understand why one choice might work better than another. In-person design allows for nuance. A ring can be adjusted slightly to better suit your hand. A stone can be reset to honor its history. A design can evolve as you talk through it, rather than being locked in from the start. You’re also working with professionals who can explain trade-offs clearly and honestly. What will wear well over time, what fits your lifestyle, and where your budget is best spent. There’s no pressure, just guidance. And when the piece is finished, you know exactly how it came to be. Nothing feels mysterious or rushed. Why The Way You Design Matters Custom jewelry isn’t just about the final piece. It’s about trust. When you work in person with a jeweler who will be there long after the design is complete, you gain peace of mind. Your ring can be resized. Your necklace can be repaired. Your story is remembered. At K. Hollis, custom jewelry often includes pieces clients already own. Stones from inherited jewelry, gold from unworn chains, or elements that hold sentimental value. That kind of design simply doesn’t translate well online, but it’s where some of the most meaningful pieces come from. There’s also something reassuring about seeing where your jewelry is made, meeting the people behind it, and knowing exactly who to call if you have a question. So Which Option Is Better? There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer, and that’s okay. Online customization works when you want something simple and fast. In-person design works when you want to feel supported, informed, and confident every step of the way. It’s especially helpful if you’re unsure where to start or if the piece you’re creating carries emotional weight. Custom jewelry doesn’t have to feel overwhelming or high-pressure. Sometimes it’s just about having a conversation, seeing what’s possible, and letting the design come together naturally with someone who understands both the technical details and the personal significance behind them. That’s often where the most meaningful pieces begin. Ready to explore custom jewelry in person? Schedule a consultation or stop into K. Hollis Jewelers to see materials up close and talk through ideas at your own pace.
- Jewelry That Says More: A Guide to Meaningful Gifts
If you’re looking for a meaningful gift that truly shows someone you love them, this guide is for you. Jewelry is a beautiful and lasting gesture, made even more special by the gemstones and designs that symbolize love, unity, faithfulness, and connection. Whether you’re shopping for Valentine’s Day, an anniversary, or simply a thoughtful surprise, understanding the meaning behind different styles can help you choose a piece that feels personal and intentional. Below are some timeless jewelry designs and gemstones, along with the meanings that have been associated with them for generations. Meaningful Jewelry Gifts: A Guide to Timeless Designs Gemstone Jewelry Gemstones have long been valued not only for their beauty but also for the symbolism they carry. Choosing a gemstone with meaning can add depth to your gift and make it feel even more thoughtful. Ruby Rubies are widely known as a symbol of passion and love. Their rich red color has long been associated with deep emotion, romance, and devotion. Ruby jewelry makes a striking statement and is often chosen to represent strong, heartfelt connections. Emerald Emeralds have historically been seen as an amulet for good fortune. In ancient cultures, they were believed to foster love, fertility, and renewal. Their vibrant green hue represents growth and harmony, making emerald jewelry a meaningful choice for those looking to nurture their relationship. Sapphire Sapphires are associated with trust, loyalty, and strength. They have been worn for centuries as a symbol of faithfulness and sincerity. While classic blue sapphires remain popular, sapphires come in a range of colors, offering meaningful options that feel both timeless and personal. Two-Stone Jewelry: A Symbol of Togetherness Two-stone jewelry, also known as toi et moi , which translates to “you and me,” features two stones set side by side. This design symbolizes two people coming together in love and partnership. Each stone can represent an individual, a shared journey, or two meaningful moments. Two-stone pieces are a thoughtful way to reflect connection while still feeling modern and understated. Interlocking Circle Designs: A Lasting Bond Interlocking circle designs represent an unbreakable bond between two people. The connected shapes symbolize unity, continuity, and lasting connection. Often subtle and elegant, this style is easy to wear every day and serves as a quiet reminder of the relationship it represents. Interlocking circles are a meaningful option for those who appreciate symbolism without being overly literal. Heart Jewelry: The Classic Symbol of Love Heart jewelry is a classic way to show someone you love them. While it is one of the most recognizable symbols of affection, today’s heart designs are more refined and wearable than ever. From delicate pendants to simple gold or diamond accents , heart jewelry can feel sweet, timeless, and personal without being overdone. It’s a thoughtful choice for expressing love in a direct and heartfelt way. Choosing a Gift with Meaning The most meaningful jewelry gifts are chosen with intention. Whether it’s a gemstone that represents love and loyalty or a design that symbolizes connection and unity, understanding the meaning behind a piece can help you find something that truly resonates. At K. Hollis Jewelers, we’re always happy to help guide you through different styles and meanings so you can choose a gift that feels right for the person you’re shopping for. The Importance of Personalization in Jewelry When selecting a piece of jewelry, personalization can elevate the gift. Consider engraving a special date or a meaningful phrase. This small touch can transform a beautiful piece into a cherished keepsake. Personalized jewelry speaks volumes about the thought and care put into the gift. Final Thoughts on Meaningful Jewelry Gifts In conclusion, meaningful jewelry is more than just an accessory. It is a representation of emotions, connections, and shared moments. Whether you choose a gemstone, a two-stone design, or a classic heart, the right piece can convey your feelings in a lasting way. Remember, the best gifts come from the heart, and understanding the significance behind each piece can make your choice even more special. Explore the world of jewelry with intention, and let your gifts tell a story of love and connection.
- Gold Prices Are Still Rising in 2026. What Does That Mean for You?
Back in February 2025, we shared an update on rising gold prices and what that meant for jewelry buyers, sellers, and collectors. Since then, the precious metals market has continued to climb, with today’s prices reaching some of the highest levels we’ve ever seen. If you’ve been thinking about selling gold, trading in old jewelry, upgrading a piece, or investing in fine jewelry, now is an important time to understand what’s happening and how it may impact your decisions. At K. Hollis Jewelers, our goal is to help you make informed choices for your collection, whether you’re buying, redesigning, or simply wanting to better understand what you already own. Where Gold and Other Metals Stand Today As of January 26, 2026, precious metals have seen significant increases compared to early 2025: Gold: Around $5,092 per ounce Silver: Around $107 per ounce Platinum: Around $2,549 per ounce For comparison, in early 2025, gold was hovering closer to the high $2,000s and low $3,000s per ounce. That means gold has increased more than 1.5x in a relatively short period of time. This kind of movement is uncommon and creates meaningful opportunities for many of our clients. Why Are Gold Prices Still Rising? Gold prices fluctuate based on supply, demand, and broader economic conditions. The continued rise is being supported by several key factors : Global economic and geopolitical uncertainty Inflation and currency value concerns Strong central bank and institutional gold buying Together, these trends have helped keep gold and other precious metals at elevated levels and support long-term strength in the market. What This Means for You Your Gold Jewelry May Be Worth More Than You Think Broken jewelry, old chains, single earrings, outdated styles, or pieces you no longer wear may be worth significantly more today than they were just a year ago. Many clients are surprised to learn how much value is sitting in their jewelry box. Trade-Ins Go Further Higher gold prices can make trading in gold especially powerful. Your old gold can be applied toward: A new piece of fine jewelry An engagement ring or wedding band A custom redesign An upgrade to a higher-quality diamond or gemstone With today’s prices, your trade-in value may cover a larger portion of your purchase than you expect. A Smart Time to Redesign or Upgrade If you love the sentimental value of a piece but not the style, redesigning can be a great option. Rising gold prices mean your existing gold can be repurposed into something new while maximizing its current value. Is Now a Good Time to Get Your Jewelry Appraised? Yes. With gold and precious metals at historic highs, updated appraisals are more important than ever for insurance and peace of mind. You may want to prioritize an updated appraisal if: Your appraisal is more than 3 to 5 years old You’ve inherited jewelry and are unsure of its current value Gold and diamond prices have changed significantly since your last appraisal You’ve had a piece redesigned or upgraded You want to make sure your insurance coverage reflects today’s replacement costs Outdated appraisals can leave you underinsured, meaning your coverage may not reflect what it would actually cost to replace a piece today. A current appraisal helps protect what matters most and gives you a clearer picture of your jewelry’s true value in today’s market. A Smart Way to Shop Gold Jewelry Right Now As gold prices rise, how and when you shop can make a difference. At K. Hollis Jewelers, we don’t automatically raise the prices of in-stock jewelry every time the gold market increases. Many of the pieces in our cases were purchased or made when gold costs were lower, which means you may find especially strong value on in-stock pieces. For special orders and made-to-order jewelry, pricing is based on the current cost of gold at the time the piece is created. As gold continues to rise, special order pricing may increase over time. If you’re considering a custom piece or special order, placing your order sooner rather than later can help you lock in today’s pricing before potential increases. This is one of the ways we help our clients shop thoughtfully and get the most value from their jewelry purchases. What Should You Do Next? With gold and other metals at historic highs, now is simply a smart time to: Evaluate pieces you no longer wear Consider trade-in or redesign options Update appraisals for important pieces Take advantage of elevated gold value Talk through your options with a trusted local jeweler Let’s Make the Most of Today’s Market Together Gold prices don’t stay at historic highs forever. Whether you’re holding onto jewelry you no longer wear, considering a redesign, thinking about a special purchase, or simply wanting to make sure your important pieces are properly insured, now is a great time to take action. At K. Hollis Jewelers, we’re here to offer honest guidance, not pressure. Bring in what you have, ask questions, and let’s take a look together. You may be surprised how today’s market can help you turn what’s sitting in your jewelry box into something meaningful for the next chapter.
