These gems have already made big waves in the industry, and they're not going away anytime soon. Unfortunately, some retail jewelers and diamond wholesalers with a large investment in natural, mined diamond inventory spread misinformation or misleading information to protect their investment. Otherwise, there’s plenty of reliable information out there from reputable sources on the pros and cons of lab-grown diamonds. K. Hollis Jewelers has sold lab-grown diamonds for years. We believe they’re a great option for our customers. Having said that, we think you should always know what you're getting before you buy. We feel that it’s our responsibility to help you understand how to make the best choice. Here’s what you need to know about lab-grown diamonds: Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Real Diamonds? Absolutely. Chemically, physically, and optically, lab-grown diamonds are identical to natural ones. They have the same crystal structure and beautiful sparkle as natural diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds also have the same famous Mohs hardness of 10 and are just as durable as natural diamonds. Can You Tell the Difference Between a Lab-Made Diamond and a Natural One? Nope. Visually, lab-grown diamonds are identical to natural ones. We have ways to tell them apart, like tiny inscriptions or special tests.  Lab-grown diamonds should always have a tiny laser inscription that identifies the diamond as lab-grown. The inscription can only be seen under magnification on the diamond’s girdle — the widest part of the diamond that forms its outline when you look at it from the top. Most larger diamonds (1 carat or larger) also have a lab report number inscribed on the girdle. Diamond reports contain lots of details about the diamond including whether the stone is mined or lab-grown. If there's nothing inscribed on the girdle, we need specialized testing equipment to tell us whether the diamond is natural or lab grown. Can a Diamond Tester Detect Lab-Created Diamonds? No. Lab-grown diamonds have the same thermal and electrical conductivity as mined diamonds. So, they will pass a standard diamond tester exam. Can a Jeweler Tell the Difference Between Lab-grown and Mined Diamonds? No, most jewelers won't be able to tell the difference (assuming, of course, that the diamond has no girdle inscriptions). However, jewelers who are also trained gemologists may be able to tell whether a diamond is lab-grown with the aid of special-purpose testing equipment. Still, the only way to be near 100% certain is to send the diamond to a gemological laboratory and get a diamond report. Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Less Expensive Than Mined Diamonds? Yes, lab grown diamonds are less expensive than mined diamonds and the price for lab grown has been dropping since they were introduced to the market. Do More People Buy Lab-Grown Diamonds Over Natural Diamonds? At the end of the day, this presents a choice that only you can make. Some people feel that lab-grown diamonds are inappropriate for an engagement ring because they're "cheap” or less rare than mined diamonds. Others feel that a diamond is a diamond, whether it came from the ground or a laboratory. Still others prefer lab-grown diamonds over mined diamonds for ethical and environmental reasons. Industry statistics currently tell us that about ⅔ of people aged 21-40 are willing to consider lab-grown diamonds for an engagement ring. At K.Hollis Jewelers, lab grown diamonds account for over 80% of all of our diamond sales. We don’t necessarily see people spending less on a diamond for an engagement ring. Instead, we see that many customers choose a larger, higher quality lab-grown diamond. There will always be people that prefer a natural diamond, but given the lower prices and guaranteed ethical sourcing, a lab-grown diamond is a practical and guilt-free alternative. Do Lab-Created Diamonds Hold Their Value as Well and Natural Diamonds? No, while lab-grown diamonds may not hold their value as well as natural ones, their lower initial cost makes up for it. Lab-grown diamonds can be manufactured in high quantities while natural diamonds cannot be produced quickly or in high quantities.  What about the Investment Value of Diamonds? In reality, diamonds––whether lab-grown or mined––are not great investments. Their value tends to stay stagnant or even drop over time. Unless you're dropping some serious cash on a large, high-color white, almost flawless diamond, natural diamonds aren’t as rare as the diamond industry would like you to believe. The vast majority of natural diamonds do not appreciate in value.  The investment myth is largely the work of the marketing and operations teams at DeBeers who controlled the diamond supply chain and created some of the most creative and effective ads ever created. In reality, all but the rarest diamonds dramatically drop in value the second you buy them.  After that, a mined diamond is likely to slowly regain some value, but it's unlikely you'll be able to sell your natural diamond and break even within your lifetime. Our opinion is that the availability of lab-grown diamonds will also decrease the value of natural diamonds - if for no other reason than demand for natural diamonds will decrease as the demand for lab-grown diamonds increases. Addressing Common Myths To wrap up, we want to highlight some of the misinformation we see out on the internet. We’ll give each of them our rating of “True”, “Partially True”, or “Misleading”. 1. A Mass Produced Product Will Never Hold its Value. Misleading – value can mean many things and just because something is mass-produced doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have value and special meaning. 2. A Rare and Natural Product Will Have More Sentimentality. Misleading – sentimentality is tied more to the circumstances and the symbolism of something and less to where a product came from. 3. Women Love the Allure of a Natural Diamond. Partially True – this would be a true statement if it said, “Most women love the allure of any diamond”. 4. Lab-Created Diamonds Are Not as Eco-Friendly as You Think. Partially True – the manufacturing process for lab-grown diamonds uses a lot of energy. However, it does not cause the same physical damage to the earth as mining does, and it does not rely on the labor of humans to extract the diamonds from the earth. 5. The Value of Lab-Created Diamonds Has Already Dropped Significantly. True – keep in mind that the availability of lab-grown has also pulled the price of natural diamonds lower, and we believe that overall lower prices for consumers is a good thing. 6. Gemologists Can Always Tell the Difference. Partially True – since lab-grown and natural are physically identical in every way, the statement that every “expert” can always tell the difference is just not accurate. 7. There’s No Trade Value in Synthetic Diamonds. Misleading – lab-grown diamonds are NOT synthetic diamonds, so this statement is relying on the consumer not understanding the difference between a real diamond – natural or lab-grown – and a synthetic diamond – something that looks like a diamond, but doesn’t have the same physical characteristics of a diamond. 8. Enjoy The Beauty and Value of a Natural Diamond. True – however the statement is equally true for a lab-grown diamond. 9. You may want to trade-in or trade-up a lab-grown diamond in a few years, only to find it's worth far less than you paid for it. Mostly True – however, the same is likely to be true for natural diamonds. Final Thoughts At the end of the day, whether you choose a lab-grown or natural diamond is up to you. If you own jewelry, you probably want it insured - it's relatively easy to damage, and it's small, so it can be relatively easy to lose or for someone to steal. Your two basic options are adding a jewelry rider to your homeowner's or renter's policy or purchasing a separate personal jewelry insurance policy. The trick is to ensure that your policy covers the replacement value. You don't want to be under-insured (you won't be covered in total if you make a claim), and you don't want to be over-insured (your premium is tied to the amount the item is insured for, so you will be paying unnecessary premiums for no additional coverage). Here are some of the more common questions we get... Do I choose who replaces my jewelry when I make a claim? Unless there is a clause in your policy indicating you can go to the jeweler of your choice to have your item replaced or repaired, your insurer will likely choose the jeweler. Because of their volume buying power, insurers calculate their premiums based on the assumption that they will pay less to replace the insured item than you will. You may buy one item, two, four, or six in your lifetime. Your insurance company buys hundreds every month. They expect and receive volume discounts from their suppliers for the items they buy. It's worth comparing the cost of putting a rider on your homeowner's or renter's insurance versus getting a policy from a company like Jewelers Mutual. You will likely need a jewelry and gemstone appraisal to add a rider for more coverage on your homeowner’s insurance or a new policy specifically for your jewelry pieces. Jewelry items insured through a rider on your homeowner's or renter's policy usually don’t appreciate them, so it’s a good idea to have your items reappraised every three to five years. Otherwise, if you have the misfortune of damaging or losing an item whose market value has increased, you may be stuck with a replacement value that may not cover the repair or replacement cost. You also want to ask prospective insurers if they ever depreciate the values of insured items and on what basis. Some policies may be “all risk,” meaning they cover a wide range of incidents. Other policies only cover “Named risk” that only cover specific incidents. So make sure you know what kind of losses are covered, so you don't have a nasty surprise if something unusual happens to your jewelry. Some policies cover damage, loss, and theft as the most common risks, but other things like “mysterious disappearance” are covered. For example, suppose your insured items turn up missing, and you have no idea how that happened many or even when it happened. In that case, your insurer could consider that a mysterious disappearance instead of a theft. If your policy excludes mysterious disappearances, you won’t be covered. Some other situations to consider are things like you are covered if you loan your jewelry to a friend or child and the pieces are lost or damaged or if your jewelry consists of pairs or sets (such as earrings, wedding bands, or other ensembles) will your policy replace the entire set if one item is lost or damaged. Can I get cash instead of replacing my jewelry? Cash value insurance is a more expensive and uncommon option for riders but will give you the most flexibility to choose how your pieces are repaired or replaced. If you’ve insured an item and are paying a premium based on its replacement value, you will likely not get the replacement value in cash. Mistake 3 - It doesn't matter where I buy my diamond if I get a good deal. Mistake 4 - Online is the best and cheapest place to buy a diamond. Mistake 5 - Price is the most critical aspect of buying a diamond. Here's How to Avoid These Mistakes MISTAKE 1 "When I know about the 4 C's, I know everything I need to know about buying a diamond" - that would be great, but it just isn't so. Subtle differences in quality make dramatic price differences. What the diamond seller doesn't tell you gets most diamond buyers in trouble. We encourage you to become educated about the 4 C's because they are essential to the diamond buying process, but only some of them exist. 3 of the 4 C's are straightforward - carat weight, color, and clarity. Carat weight is easy to verify - weigh the diamond. Color is a bit subjective, but comparing a diamond to a set of master stones allows you to confirm the color. Clarity gets trickier as there are many different types of imperfections (and methods of hiding them), so it's essential to work with an experienced jeweler who will give you sound advice about the type, location, and potential risks of each diamond's structure. The 4th C is Cut and may be the most important and misunderstood. In fact, cut is so important that it can affect a diamond's price by up to 50%. A well-cut diamond will reflect all the light that enters the diamond back through the top of the stone. You'll see sparkle, fire, and brilliance when a diamond is cut well. A poorly cut stone allows light to exit the stone through the bottom or sides and has a different beauty than a well-cut diamond. While a diamond certificate will contain information about the cut of a diamond, there are so many variables that come into play that the only way to verify the quality of the cut is to see the stone in person and experience the characteristics of the stone in different lighting environments. Simply put, poorly cut diamonds are ugly and are not good buys. Avoid this mistake by doing your homework, learning the 4 C's, and working with a jeweler that you can trust. MISTAKE 2 "The diamond has a diamond grading report, so I know exactly what I am getting" - here is one of the most important things you can know when buying a diamond... not all diamond grading reports are created equal. Dozens of grading labs produce grading reports. If the certificate is not a GIA Grading Certificate, then the buyer beware. Many of the diamond grading reports in the marketplace are not worth the paper they are written on, and some are counterfeit. Remember that subtle differences in the grading report can make significant price differences. "Sweet Grading" is a real problem in the diamond-selling business. Sweet grading means that the color and clarity grades are "sweetened," one grade higher than they are. This translates into a big difference in price and means that the great buy you think you are getting is a very poor buy. So make sure your diamond grading report is accurate by working with an experienced jeweler that can spot inaccurate or counterfeit grading reports. MISTAKE 3 It doesn't matter where I buy my diamond as long as I get a good deal" - where you buy your diamond is every bit as important as the diamond itself. The unfortunate fact is that there are people out there that will take advantage of you by offering deals that are just too good to be true - and they are. A large number of diamonds that you'll see advertised on the Internet don't exist, so be careful! Remember that slight differences in a diamond can significantly impact its value. The Internet has brought us a wealth of valuable knowledge that is a mere click away. It has also brought us an equal or more significant amount of misinformation that is a mere click away. So please get familiar with the company you are dealing with, its reputation, history, and affiliations. MISTAKE 4 "The best and cheapest place to buy a diamond is online" - that's not what we've found. We work hard to ensure that we find the best diamond values available for our customers; we buy hundreds of diamonds and have never purchased diamonds off the Internet. Why? It is the fastest way to make a diamond-buying mistake for our customers and us. A description of a diamond and the actual diamond can be two very different things; subtle differences can make an enormous difference in the beauty and value of a diamond. So even when a diamond appears to be precisely what you are looking for at the price you want to pay, it may not be. A beautiful diamond almost speaks to us; when you see it in front of you, it is easy to understand why it is the universal symbol of love. There is no substitute for experiencing the diamond firsthand. It would be best to hold, feel, see, and compare diamonds in person to avoid this mistake. MISTAKE 5 "Price is the most important aspect of buying a diamond" is invalid. Once you've purchased a diamond, someone still needs to set it into your jewelry, help you care for it for a lifetime, and stand behind it should something go wrong. Too many diamond dealers out there would like nothing more than to sell you a diamond and accept absolutely no responsibility for what might happen after the sale. Make sure you work with a jeweler who understands that selling diamonds is only the beginning. So know whom you are dealing with and ensure they are knowledgeable, ethical, and have your best interests at heart.

When I picked out the diamond ring that I would present to the woman I was hoping to spend the rest of my life with, the last thing on my mind was how to care for it over a lifetime (spoiler alert, she said yes!). I had no idea that jewelry needs love and attention just like the person wearing it. Like so many others, we learned about jewelry care the hard way. After several years of wedded bliss, Karen looked down at her left hand and noticed that the center diamond from her engagement had vanished. Panic set in. We combed every inch of the house, the car, the yard, and everywhere she had been that day. It was gone. We never found it. So, let’s talk about something that I wish I knew about before we lost that very special diamond. Let’s talk about what to look for so you can prevent a loss before it happens. Symptoms of a Loose Stone The center diamond or gemstone in any ring is the one to be most worried about. It is the most susceptible to loss and typically the most valuable part of the ring. You don’t need to be an expert to spot warning signs that indicate your jewelry's about to break. If you notice any of these symptoms, I’d suggest that you remove the jewelry, place it in a baggie, seal it up, and get it to your jeweler. Too-Short Prong - If you notice one of your prongs appears slightly shorter than the others or its rounded top seems to have narrowed, the security of your diamond or gemstone may be at risk. Missing or Bent Prong - If you have a prong so damaged that you can see that it's no longer supporting the stone, you are one clothing snag or bump away from losing your stone. Shifted Stone - Is your center stone no longer sitting level? Does it seem to have rotated slightly? Either abnormality indicates your prongs are no longer holding the stone tightly enough. Since the center stone is the most valuable and often most vulnerable portion of your ring, visit your jeweler for a repair as soon as possible if any of these symptoms arise. Bracelets, Necklaces, Chains, and Earring Red Flags Rings aren't the only type of jewelry susceptible to wear and tear. Bracelets, necklaces, and earrings all have common warning signs as well. Links, clasps and prongs are made of metals that move, rub, and thin over time. Damaged Clasps - Clasps that don't close tightly, or require a little finagling to get just right, aren't something to ignore. Your bracelet or necklace might seem secure, but even a slight compromise in the integrity of the clasp puts your entire piece at risk. Stretched Strands - Especially applicable to pearls, stretched-out necklace or bracelet strands are also dangerous. If your pearls seem to hang slightly lower than usual, bring them into your jeweler and ask about re-stringing. Broken Earring Posts - Broken or bent earring posts make the earring backs less reliable. Realizing you're unexpectedly rocking the one-earring trend may be second on the list of panic-inducing jewelry loss mishaps. Worn Chain – Metals wear thin as the jewelry surfaces rub against each other. Chains are particularly susceptible to this type of wear since they typically comprise links. If your chain breaks due to wear, it is highly likely that other links are also worn but haven’t broken yet. Have your jeweler check all the links before you spend money to fix just the one that broke. You don’t need to be an expert to check for these warning signs, but we typically recommend that you have your valuable fine jewelry checked by an expert every six months or so. Check for Stamps or Hallmarks The first step is to look for small markings called hallmarks that indicate the gold’s purity. We were never fans of the shopping experience we had at most jewelry stores, so when we opened our little shop back in 2005, we set out to create an experience that we would feel good about if we were customers. Our core pricing philosophy is simple - we price our products and services at a fair price every day. No games. No gimmicks. Here are a couple of the “don’ts” that are inherent in that philosophy: Don’t mark up our prices so that we can mark them down and call it a “discount” or a “sale” Don’t offer or advertise gimmicks that make customers feel like they are getting a great “deal” when they are not Don’t run a continuous stream of sales so only the customers that buy during a sale are getting a fair price What is a diamond trade-up program? So let’s talk about diamond trade-up programs, how they work, and if they make sense to you as a customer. On the surface, a trade-up program looks really attractive – get credit for the full price you paid for your diamond and apply it to the purchase of a new bigger, better diamond. How can you go wrong? Like anything… the devil is in the detail. There are always conditions and restrictions that apply to these programs. Let’s take a look at what’s common across almost every trade-up program: You can only participate in a trade-up program at the retailer that sold you the original diamond. You have to spend at least twice the amount of the original purchase price on your new diamond. Sale items, discounted items, and coupons are typically excluded. You can only trade a natural diamond for a natural diamond and a lab diamond for a lab diamond. Might still look like a good deal, right? Here’s what you need to know. In stores that rely on discounting, special financing, and frequent sales to entice customers to buy, their core pricing strategy is to mark up so they can mark down. The purpose of this strategy is to give customers the illusion that they are getting a deal. Trade-up programs typically exclude sale items, so given the fact that their pricing strategy is to use high mark-ups for their retail prices, you could be grossly overpaying for your new diamond. If a customer overpaid for the original diamond, the problem compounds itself because the customer will be required to buy a new diamond priced at least twice as high as the original. Let’s say you overpaid by just $250 on the original diamond. That means there is an extra $500 already built to the price of the new diamond that shouldn’t be there. Determining the market price of a diamond is complex because there are so many variables to diamond value - size, color, clarity, cut, polish, depth, proportions, size of the table, etc. Be aware that some retailers are selling inferior quality diamonds using less reputable diamond certificates to establish artificial value. All diamond certificates are NOT created equal. GIA certificates are the gold standard. There are several diamond grading labs out there that provide certificates that exaggerate the quality of a diamond. This allows some retailers to use certificates that exaggerate diamond quality and price to convince you that a diamond is worth more than it is. What is an example of how a diamond trade-up program is used? Here’s a great example of something that happened at our store this week (and what prompted me to write this blog). A really great customer called to tell us that she was going to one of the large jewelry retailers (begins with a “J” and ends with “ared”) because they would let her trade in her 1-carat lab-grown diamond for a new 1.5-carat lab-grown diamond and she would only need to pay $1,500 for the upgrade. She was certain she was getting a great deal and wanted to know why we didn’t do this. Let’s break this down a bit… If she is paying $1,500 to upgrade her diamond: The price of the new 1.5-carat lab-grown diamond is at least $3,000 since trade-ups require that the cost of the new diamond is at least double the cost of the original diamond. The customer is giving the retailer the $1,500 diamond she originally purchased. We asked our customer to provide more detail on the quality of the new diamond so we could tell her if she is getting a good deal or not. If she were getting a good deal, we would absolutely tell her that. We called a couple of our suppliers and then called her back to let her know that our regular price for an equivalent quality 1.5-carat lab-grown diamond would be about $1,500 – half the price of the other retailer’s diamond. This was not such a good deal for our customer. Why K. Hollis Jewelers doesn't have a diamond trade-up program So, the bottom line for our customer: Our everyday price was half of the other retailer’s retail price for the new diamond. She was able to keep her original diamond. She was thrilled and is using the original diamond to create a new diamond pendant. We’re not saying that a trade-up program is necessarily a bad thing. A trade-up program can be a good value for a customer as long as they paid a fair price for the original diamond, they are paying a fair price on the new diamond, and they can afford to buy something that is twice as expensive as the original. The most important thing is always to work with a jeweler that you can trust, and that will stand behind everything they sell. At K. Hollis Jewelers, we price our products and services fairly every day, so you don’t have to worry about overpaying or feel like you need to wait for a sale to get a fair price. The products we have on clearance are discounted from our everyday fair prices, so they really are a great deal. No illusion. No games. No gimmicks. When our customers want to upgrade a diamond, we’ll price everything fairly, give them a reasonable offer to buy their diamonds and gold, won’t require them to spend at least twice the price of the original diamond, and we don’t require that they purchased the original jewelry from us. We just feel this is a more honest and transparent way to treat our customers.
