  • Farewell to Apparel, Hello to More Jewelry

    K. Hollis Jewelers has gone through amazing change over the past 20+ years. It all started as a “side-gig” for Karen making and selling handmade beaded jewelry from our dining room table (originally called “Garden of Beadin”) and has evolved into one of the largest full-service, award-winning jewelry stores in Illinois.  It’s been a wild ride, and change is coming again. From Small Beginnings to Big Dreams When we opened our first storefront in 2005, we had just 1,100 square feet, four part-time employees, and not a single piece over $500 in the cases. Within months, we added our first jeweler, expanded into fine jewelry, introduced engagement rings, and began offering custom design. By 2012, we had grown into a 4,000-square-foot space with a wine bar and event area. In 2021, we took another leap and moved into our own 10,000-square-foot building in Batavia. Originally, our plan was to use part of the new building for another tenant. But as many of you know, Karen had long dreamed of adding women’s apparel to complement our jewelry selection, and the timing felt right to give it a try. The Boutique Chapter Over the past three years, we’ve learned so much about the apparel business and had a blast along the way. From hosting fashion shows to seeing mothers and daughters enjoy an afternoon of shopping together in the boutique, sharing Karen’s style and love of fashion with our customers has been incredibly rewarding. That said, running an apparel business comes with its own unique challenges. After lots of discussion and a few tears, we’ve made the difficult decision to close our apparel department. Refocusing on What We Do Best This change allows us to focus fully on what we’ve always done best: creating exceptional jewelry experiences. We’re returning our full attention to fine jewelry, bridal and engagement rings, custom design, expert repair, and everything that makes K. Hollis Jewelers a destination for the pieces that mark life’s most meaningful moments. As we begin our final apparel sale , we want to sincerely thank everyone who supported the boutique. Your enthusiasm and friendship have meant the world to us, and we’re so grateful for the memories made. Looking Ahead The future at K. Hollis Jewelers is brighter than ever. We’ve expanded your favorite jewelry lines, added exciting new designers , and planned special events through the end of the year. We can’t wait to share what’s next. See you soon!

  • How to Measure Ring Size at Home

Finding the right ring size should never be a guessing game. At K. Hollis Jewelers in Batavia, IL, we make it simple to find the perfect fit whether you are planning a proposal , choosing a right hand ring, or surprising someone special. The most accurate way to know your size is to stop by our Batavia showroom and let one of our staff members measure it for you. If you can’t make it in, no worries. With a piece of string, a printable guide, or a plastic ring sizer, you can get a confident measurement at home in just a few minutes. Measure Ring Size with a String This easy method only needs a piece of string, a ruler, and a few minutes. Wrap a string around the base of the finger where you will wear the ring. Make it snug but not tight so it mimics the feel of a real ring. Mark the spot where the string overlaps with a fine marker. Lay the string flat and measure the length in millimeters from the start to your mark. Compare that measurement to a ring size chart to find the closest match. Pro tip: Try this at the end of the day when fingers are naturally a bit larger. That helps avoid choosing a size that will feel too tight later. Use a Printable Ring Size Chart Download and print the Ring Chart and Sizer Guide  on standard US letter size paper at 100 percent scale. Check the printed guide against a ruler to make sure it printed correctly. Option 1: Measuring Tape Method 1. Cut along the measuring tape outline and make a small slit at the dotted line. 2. Insert the numbered end through the slit to form a loop. 3. Place the loop around the base of your finger with the numbers facing out. 4. Pull the tape until it is snug but comfortable. The number aligned with the slit is your ring size. Pro tip: For wide bands over 10 millimeters, add a half size. If you normally wear a size 6, consider a 6.5 for a wider band. Option 2: Match an Existing Ring 1. Use the printed chart that includes actual size circles. 2. Place the ring on each circle until the inner edge of the ring lines up exactly with the circle’s outer line. 3. If the ring falls between two sizes, choose the larger size for comfort. Measure with a Ring Sizer Tool For a more accurate measurement, try a plastic adjustable ring sizer. It is a low cost, reusable option that works like a belt. It is especially helpful when you are between sizes or buy rings often. How to use it: Insert the pointed end through the buckle to form a loop. Slip it over your finger and tighten gradually until it feels snug but comfortable. Make sure it slides over the knuckle with slight resistance and is not pinching. Read the number where the sizer meets the buckle. That is your ring size. Ring Sizing Tips for a Perfect Fit You'll know you have the right size if your ring moves naturally with your hand, stays in place, and feels comfortable. Follow these tips to get the best fit. Measure more than once Finger size changes with the time of day, temperature, and hydration. Measure your finger at different times for a few days to get consistent results, especially if you are between sizes. Account for band width Wider bands will feel more snug. If you want a thicker style, consider sizing up by a quarter or half size. Avoid measuring when fingers are swollen Heat and activity can cause swelling, and cold can make fingers smaller. Don’t measure right after exercise, a hot shower, or long sun exposure. Don’t guess someone else’s size If you’re planning a surprise, discreetly borrow a ring they already wear on the correct finger and compare it to a printable chart. Or bring that ring to K. Hollis Jewelers for an accurate measurement. That way you avoid guessing and costly resizing, while keeping the gift a secret. Ring Sizing FAQs What's the best time of day to measure my ring size?   Measure in the afternoon or evening when fingers are naturally a bit larger. Avoid measuring when your hands are very cold or visibly swollen, since that can give you an inaccurate size. How do I know if my ring fits properly?   A correct fit slides over your knuckle with slight resistance and sits snugly on the finger without pinching. It should feel secure but comfortable, not too tight or too loose. Can all rings be resized?   Gold, platinum, and silver rings can usually be resized . Materials like titanium, tungsten, and ceramic are difficult or impossible to resize. Rings with stones set all the way around the band may have limits on how much they can be resized and may require special techniques. How can I know someone's ring size for a surprise gift?   Borrow a ring they already wear on the correct finger and bring it to K. Hollis Jewelers for a discreet measurement, or compare it to a printable size chart. If you must guess, common stock sizes are about 6.5 for women and 10 for men, but keep in mind that rings with stones around the band can be hard to resize beyond one size. Do ring sizes vary from country to country?   Yes. Different countries use different sizing systems. For example, the U.S. uses numbers while the U.K. uses letters. Use a conversion chart when shopping internationally. What should I do if my finger size changes over time?   If your finger size shifts because of weight, temperature, or other factors, a jeweler can usually resize your ring . Many rings can be adjusted one or two sizes without stressing the metal. There are also alternatives like sizing beads. Talk with your jeweler to find the best solution for your piece.

  • Behind The Design: Sherry’s Custom Right Hand Ring

When Sherry walked into K. Hollis Jewelers, she had a jewelry box filled with pieces she no longer wore. Inside were rings and pendants with diamonds of every shape and size — one large stone, baguettes, princess cuts, and rounds. Each had once been special, but over time, they’d ended up tucked away, unworn and forgotten. Instead of letting those diamonds collect dust, Sherry wanted to breathe new life into them. That’s where Karen stepped in. Reimagining the Possibilities Karen sat down with Sherry to go through each piece, looking at the stones, shapes, and styles. Together, they played with ideas, imagining how these diamonds could come together in a new design. With Karen’s guidance — and the addition of just three more diamonds — Sherry’s vision started to take shape: a bold and elegant right hand ring that would showcase her collection of stones in a way she could wear and love every day. Sherry's finished right-hand ring. A Reaction to Remember When Sherry saw her finished ring for the first time, her joy was unforgettable. She remembers screaming  because she couldn’t believe such a beautiful piece had been created from jewelry she already owned. What was once a handful of unworn rings and pendants was now a single showstopping design that felt completely “her.” A Ring to Celebrate Every Day Today, Sherry wears her custom right hand ring with pride. It’s more than just jewelry — it’s a reflection of her style and her story. And she’s already dreaming about her next custom redesign project. Thinking About Your Own Redesign? Do you have jewelry sitting in your box that you’re not wearing? Old rings, pendants, or loose stones can be reimagined into something new — something that feels like you.  At K. Hollis Jewelers in Batavia, we’ll sit down with you, listen to your ideas, and guide you through every step until we create a piece you’ll fall in love with all over again. Stop in and let’s start designing your story.

  • Surveillance Pricing: How Retailers Adjust Prices Around You

Have you ever noticed the price of an item online changing after you’ve viewed it, or seen one price in a store, another on your phone, and yet a different price on your computer? This isn’t a glitch—it’s called surveillance pricing , and it’s becoming more common. What Is Surveillance Pricing? Surveillance pricing occurs when retailers track shopping behavior—what you click, search for, or even where you live—to adjust prices in real time. The more interest you show in an item, the more the system may interpret that you’re willing to pay a certain price. For decades, social media platforms, data brokers, big-box and e-commerce retailers, and financial institutions have collected data about consumer behavior. With the help of AI and automated pricing systems, retailers can now adjust prices based on individual preferences, location, and browsing habits. The goal: set the price a customer is most likely to pay for a specific product at a specific time. Where You Might See It Online:  Companies like Amazon and airlines frequently adjust prices based on browsing history, device, and location. Not all shoppers see the same deal at the same time. In Stores:  Loyalty programs, apps, digital shelf tags, and geolocation data can influence pricing or offers. If a retailer observes that a customer frequently buys a product or seems ready to purchase, offers may adjust accordingly. Real-World Examples Amazon:  Prices for the same item can fluctuate multiple times per day. Airlines:  Ticket prices often change after repeated searches on the same route. Ride-Sharing Apps:  Surge pricing adjusts rates in real time based on demand. Target:  Prices may vary based on location or search history. A Tale of Two Shoppers Consider Sarah and Daniel, both shopping at the same store for the same TV: Sarah:  Uses the store app from the parking lot. The TV shows $499 with a $20 coupon. Daniel:  Already in the electronics aisle, has checked the TV multiple times this week. The app now shows $549—no coupon. These differences reflect how retailers can use location and browsing data to adjust pricing or promotions, rather than an error or glitch. Tips for Shopping Online and In-Store Clear cookies or browse in private mode when shopping online Compare prices across devices and platforms Take your time on major purchases to monitor pricing trends Consider local, trusted retailers who prioritize relationships and expertise Shopping with Confidence at K. Hollis At K. Hollis Jewelers, our pricing approach is straightforward: we don’t use algorithms or hidden trackers to set prices. Buying jewelry with us is based on trust, transparency, and fairness . Craig carefully chose the diamond, then gave Tina the freedom to design the setting. Tina showing off her new stunning ring for the first time! During her design consultation, Tina fell in love with Karen’s own engagement ring. She decided to make a version inspired by it, but with details crafted just for her. From the band design to the finishing touches, Tina was involved in every step. The result? A timeless upgrade that feels one-of-a-kind. • Lab-Grown vs. Mined Diamonds: What You Need to Know Before You Shop

Choosing a Diamond: Lab-Grown vs. Mined Diamonds Choosing a diamond is a deeply personal decision. It is one of the most exciting parts of designing your engagement ring or finding a meaningful piece of jewelry. At K. Hollis Jewelers, we’re here to guide you through that choice with honesty, expertise, and a little sparkle along the way. Our mission is to help customers choose the diamond that is right for them, not just one of the hundreds of diamonds we have in stock. With the growing popularity of lab-grown diamonds as an attractive alternative to natural mined diamonds, we receive many questions about them. Let’s take a moment to look at the two most common questions we hear: Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds, and how do they compare to mined/natural diamonds? A side by side of a lab grown round diamond next to a round mined diamond. (left: lab-grown, right: mined) What is a Mined or Natural Diamond? Mined or natural diamonds form deep within the earth over millions of years. Natural diamonds are extracted through several methods, primarily open-pit and underground mining, with alluvial mining also playing a role. No two diamonds are exactly alike, so each one carries a unique story shaped by time and nature. What is a Lab-Grown Diamond? Lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled environments using advanced technology that replicates the natural diamond formation process. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds. They are chemically, physically, and visually identical to diamonds that form naturally in the earth. How Do They Compare in Value? It’s virtually impossible to distinguish a mined diamond from a lab-grown diamond visually. The only way to know for sure is to read the diamond’s certification or use sophisticated diamond testing tools. Lab-grown diamonds tend to be more affordable than mined diamonds. This allows couples to get more size or sparkle for their budget. Mined diamonds are known to hold value better than lab-grown diamonds. People often choose natural diamonds for their rarity and symbolism, especially if they plan to pass them down to a loved one. At K. Hollis, every diamond, whether lab-grown or mined, is certified . This ensures you can feel confident in its quality and authenticity. We have the necessary diamond testing equipment to ensure you know exactly what type of diamond you are buying. What About Sustainability and Ethics? Lab-grown diamonds are often considered a more sustainable option. They require less environmental disruption. However, both lab-grown and mined processes have environmental impacts. The true difference depends on the specific manufacturer’s practices. So, Which Diamond is Right for You? Both options allow you to choose a beautiful, real diamond that will last a lifetime. Some customers choose mined diamonds for their rarity, while others prefer lab-created diamonds for a larger or more affordable option. It comes down to what matters most to you. Whether you’re drawn to the legacy of a natural diamond or the innovative sparkle and affordability of a lab-grown diamond, we’ll guide you through every step. We want to ensure your choice fits your values, vision, and budget. Lab-Grown vs. Mined Diamonds: Key Takeaways ✔ Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds ✔ Cost of lab-grown diamonds is less than mined diamonds of similar size & quality ✔ Customers tend to choose mined for its rarity and lab for its affordability ✔ Appearance is identical to the naked eye ✔ Our job is to help each customer choose the perfect diamond for them The Emotional Connection to Diamonds Diamonds symbolize love, commitment, and eternity. Choosing the right diamond is not just about the physical attributes. It’s also about the emotional connection you have with the stone. When selecting a diamond, consider what it represents for you. Is it a symbol of love? A family heirloom? Understanding the emotional significance can help guide your choice. The Process of Choosing Your Diamond Choosing a diamond involves several steps. First, educate yourself about the different types of diamonds available. Understand the four Cs: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Next, set a budget. Knowing how much you want to spend will help narrow down your options. Visit our store or schedule a consultation. Our experts will help you find the perfect diamond that fits your criteria. The Importance of Certification Always look for certification when purchasing a diamond. Certification ensures that the diamond has been evaluated by a professional gemologist. It provides details about the diamond's quality and authenticity. At K. Hollis, we provide certification for all our diamonds. This gives you peace of mind knowing you are making a well-informed purchase. Final Thoughts Choosing a diamond is a significant decision. Whether you opt for a lab-grown or mined diamond, it should reflect your values and desires. Ready to explore your options? • Taylor Swift’s Engagement Ring: The Trend Everyone’s Talking About

Taylor Swift has always been known for her style, but her engagement ring might just be the most talked-about accessory of the year. The moment it was revealed, jewelers and fans alike started swooning over its vintage-inspired charm, timeless appeal, and one-of-a-kind sparkle. What Makes Taylor’s Ring So Special? Taylor’s ring features an elongated cushion diamond —a shape that blends the soft romance of a cushion with the flattering length of an oval. Set in yellow gold, the ring has a vintage-inspired design  that feels classic but also fresh. The setting draws attention to the diamond’s unique shape, and its old mine cut gives it an antique elegance that’s rare to find in modern engagement rings. Why Everyone Loves It This isn’t just about sparkle—it’s about sentiment and style. Taylor’s ring captures three of the biggest trends we’re seeing right now: Yellow Gold Settings  – warm, timeless, and making a big comeback. Elongated Shapes  – from ovals to radiant cuts, elongated stones create a flattering, elegant look. Vintage Inspiration  – intricate details, delicate bands, and heirloom vibes are what so many couples are gravitating toward. It’s the perfect blend of timeless and trendy—just like Taylor herself. Finding Your Own Taylor-Inspired Ring You don’t need Taylor’s exact ring to feel like your engagement story belongs in a love song.
